Gateway Project

2011

Rick Gipstein gave the club a review his proposal to the New London Rotary Foundation for the improvement to one of the entrances to the city. It will be dedicated to Phil Turner. This “Welcome to New London” sign is made up of individual nautical flags that represent the letters directly below them. Rick felt this would greatly improve the look of the O’Neill Drive. Rick continues to show innovative designs and projects to help New London.

Unsung Hero

It is an award of the club and it was established to honor a person within our community who has given volunteer service over the years without regard to recognition or reward.

New London Rotaract Club

Rotaract clubs organize a variety of projects and activities, depending primarily on the interests of the club members. However, within the Rotaract program, all clubs undertake three types of activities in varying degrees: professional development, leadership development, and service projects. Together, these three areas ensure a balanced club program and provide important experience and opportunities for the personal development of each Rotaractor.

Yale Harvard Boat Race

Every year since the 20's the New London Rotary Club has hosted along with Kiwanis and Lions a luncheon to honor the tradition of the oldest collegiate sporting event in the country. This rowing regatta features a 4 mile varsity race on the Thames River.

Cedar Grove Cemetary

This tranquill spot was selected for the placement of a stone bench. It is designed to allow people to spend some time in reflection and enjoy the peach and quiet-a chance to get away from your daily toils.

Salt for Seniors

Our Rotary club delivers a salt and sand mixture in buckets to senior citizens that are not able to get out in the winter. The buckets provide salt and sand to the seniors as well as help allow health aids to access the house when there is snow and ice. Here are some happy and cold volunteers.

New London Soup Kitchen

Several New London Rotary Club members routinely volunteer their time at the New London Soup Kitchen. In summer of 1998, the club received an urgent appeal from the Soup Kitchen, which feeds local people in need. The organization’s director was battling cancer, and fundraising was down. Through an appeal to club members $1905 was raised, and a grant from the Feinstein Challenge added an additional $500. Since 1998, additional appeals to assist the Soup Kitchen, coordinated by Rotarian Catherine Foley, have continued our club’s support

United Way Day of Caring

3rd Grade Dictionary Project

In New London, the Rotary will give dictionaries to about 470 students. The club expanded the initiative this year to include teachers. The Rotary Club held work parties to stick labels on the books and pack them into boxes. The labels noted that the gift had come from the Rotary Club, a line where students write their names.

Holiday Book Drive

To encourage reading the New London Rotary Club has had a book drive funded by its members to supply books to kids as gifts for the Holidays. In some cases these are the frist books the kids have ever received.

Teacher of the Year

Teachers from any grade level, pre-school through post-graduate at any institution public or private within the City of New London. Teachers selected have placed service to their student’s education above all else in the view of the outstanding teacher committee. Selection of the chosen teacher will be done by the committee in conjunction with input from area public and private school officials.

Award: A luncheon in that teacher’s honor to be held at a regular club meeting. Certain family members are invited to attend as a guest of the club.

Service Person of the Month

In conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and other local groups, a member of the armed services is chosen by their commander for outstanding contributions to their unit, etc…that exemplify the highest ideals of the military.

Award: A luncheon in honor of the person is held at a regular club meeting at which the New London Rotary presents a $50.00 U.S. Savings bond. Additionally, other gifts and awards are given to the recipient from various local groups and businesses. The recipient’s spouse is also invited to the luncheon.

Exemplary Workers Recognition

The Vocational Service Committee arranges for a limited number of club members to bring an employee they would like to recognize to a special luncheon during Vocational Service Month. This gives the club members a chance to publicly honor an employee that has served the company in an outstanding manner over the years.
